I have tons of work-related blog stories to do. But today I had one of those golden moments in time when life just stuns you with wonder and delight. And regular readers know I am a serious James Bond fan, so for me those rare moments often fall into the category of a 'James Bond Lifestyle' moment. I had one today and as this happened at a mobile telecoms event, in full public view, I just HAVE to share it with you.
Here's the scene. I am today in Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia, at the big annual GoMobile event - a terriffic event by the way, learned tons and met really nice people. I will come back later with some stories you will want to hear about how cool is mobile in Malaysia today. So yeah, am here to do some keynote speaking, pretty normal day for me so far. Very nice hotel (Royale Chulan) in the style of a palace, typically fabulous Malaysian hospitality - somehow it seems whenver I come here, that every Malaysian smiles all the time, it just makes this country seem so incredibly hospitable and friendly. Sorry, I digress.
And then at the lunch break I do what I try to do at all conferences, I 'mingle' a bit. I have part of the lunch at one table, and then part of the lunch at another table, to meet more of the people who came to the conference. And what happens. I sit at this one table with roughly an even mix of men and women - not unusual here, lots of women in the mobile industry in Malaysia - and do some chatting by chance with the men first, and then turn my attention to the three gorgeous young women, asking them what company they work for. I am expecting them to say they work for one of the local mobile telecoms operators/carriers in marketing or something, or perhaps one of the Malaysian broadcasters interested in mobile etc.
And one of the girls responds: we're the band.
I am doing mental arithmetic at a trillion calculations per second now. (did she say, we're the band? is there a band here today? oh yeah, the party tonight. They have booked a band? And its a girl band, not some tired old has-been rock band of retired old rockers? For a telecoms event? A girld band? Could it be? She didn't say 'we're with the band' ie something like back-up singers. So these are 'the' band tonight? Gosh, teenager girls singing to middle-aged telecoms nerds? Can this be? But she did say they are 'the band'? How can I not look stupid right now? These girls are 'the band' performing tonight? And I'm sitting at their table? And I spent the past 10 minutes chatting to those old geezer GUYS on the WRONG side fo the table, when these 3 FABULOUS babes were 'the band' bored silly at a table of tech nerds? What is wrong with me? Note to self: Self, always start with the ladies no matter what. Did she really say 'we are the band'. Wait, I am sitting with the girls who will be entertaining us in just a few hours. Oh gosh, Tomi, act like a gentleman now, what is the correct thing to say to performers?)
And so forth. This happened in about 1.3 seconds. Then I apologize for being from Finland and living in Hong Kong and not recognizing them. Then apologize further, that I do not know of their status in the Malaysian music scene, while my mind still races (but do they have a record released? I am thinking, perhaps they are somebody's daughters or something, gosh they are so young they couldn't be working in this industry, they couldn't have graduated from college, gosh, they probably haven't graduated from high school haha, they seem that young. Perhaps they are not a really 'proper' pop band, who don't have a record yet.) But no, the girls stun me massively more, telling that their current single is on the charts in Malaysia... And I learn that the girls are called the Senoritas.
Some bell rings in the back of my mind now. I have heard of a girl-band Senoritas, actually, as I recall it was a funky name for an Asian girl band, to take a Spanish name.
As I now obviously pay more attention to this part of the table than the other part, and have a moment to just 'observe' the ladies as we chat, I notice they are stunningly beautiful (and ridiculously young) women. Wow. These three must be among the hottest, sexiest, most gorgeous - and kind of 'desirable' stars in all of Malaysia today. And what is your humble blogger and telecoms author and consultant doing in Malaysia at this moment? Just acting cool: Ice cool Bond James Bond cool Double Oh Seven cool shaken not stirred cool - chatting away about music and mobile - with these three hot chicks straight off the Malaysian music charts, who will perform a private gig performance a few hours from now. And they are cheerfully chatting with me..... smiling.... as they chat with me. I must be dreaming, this doesn't happen to authors of telecoms books..
I would wish everyone who ever knew me, could see me now (haha). Here is your James Bond, again chatting wth the ladies, but not just one beautiful babe or two gorgeous girls, its three hot chicks! And seriously, honestly, from a totally personal perspective. These three real chart-hit pop stars of Malaysia, the Senoritas, who must have been bored out of their minds that lunch break in the company of telecoms geeks, and now engaged in polite conversation with a man as old as the ages of the three of them put together - were the sweetest, kindest and most open, friendly and 'normal' sounding teenagers - who seemed utterly oblivious to the fact that they were also stunningly beautiful, pop music stars, and probably everybody in the room knew exactly who they were (except me).
I know there are many pop stars who have uncontrollable ego problems and who are paranoid about any contact with their fans or just normal people. These three girls - Zyra Z, Lynnzay and Diva - showed absolutely no sign of any kind of snobbishness or any ego whatsover. What sweet, kind and friendly young girls they were at lunch with me the grand-dad aged geezer who had written some books about mobile and now engaged them in conversation about mobile and their music.
Now, I promise you, I know when I am being long-winded (like now, sorry). And I knew they would not want any long lectures about what could or couldn't be done with mobile music. We had a very cordial but high-level discussion about what I'd seen before with girl bands and mobile fans (regular readers will remember the Sugababes fan generated dance moves idea from a few years ago) and I stopped 'pestering' them about my passions. But I told them, that I would like to talk with their management, about the technical issues of mobile and music, to help the girl band reach more fans, engage with them, and obviously to sell more records and become an even bigger hit in Malaysia and beyond. The girls liked that and promised to have me meet with their management, which I did later - their record label is R Records and their management is with R Talents, both out of Malaysia.
But here is truly one of those moments of utter total sheer delight in life. I am a healthily heterosexual male and enjoy the female beauty when I see it. I am single and suddenly I get to spend part of my lunch, discussing at the same table, with three of the most stunning beautiful young women of Malaysia. Who are musicians and who would be performing later that evening at a private event where I could be right at the stage to see them. This is truly a James Bond moment. You know, those moments in the movies, where 007 casually flirts with the hotel receptionist or airline stewardess or a random lady, with no further 'adventures' but just because he is Bond and beautiful women like to flirt with him. Trust me, that does not happen to me all the time haha, those are moments that only happen in the movies, and seem only to happen to James Bond. Yet here, these three stunning Senoritas were all smiling when they spoke with me, and didn't show any indications that they were 'bored with the old dude' haha, as might happen, say if I tried to talk to some young women in a bar or disco haha...
To finish the perfection of the moment, when they did perform, their music styles were dance music. My kinda music!
So here are the pictures as promised. First, here is the formal group picture taken from their Facebook page so you see them 'properly' as you might see them on a music video etc. The Senoritas:
And here is the picture of them performing at the Awards Gala party of GoMobile 2010. I apologize for the poor quality of the image, it does not do justice to the girls but also I didn't want to go very close to the stage, so the flash on my cameraphone was overwhelmed with the distance.
And here is the James Bond Moment, when an obscure telecoms author Tomi Ahonen found himself seated at lunch with the three hottest babes in all of Malaysia, Zyra Z, Lynnzay and Diva - or known simply as Senoritas.
(Please note, the ladies at lunch had not yet gone to make-up, and hadn't dressed etc, so they were in totally casual mode.) And just look at these 3 teenagers, they could just as well be your neighbor's daughter and her two best friends. Who just happen to be also gorgeous..
My thanks and very best wishes for your career, girls! I will be talking with your management about some possible ideas to use mobile in your future to engage with fans and to sell more songs. And I hope your career will just grow by leaps and bounds, so when I am of retirement age, and you are at the top of your careers, I can tell my nephews and nieces that 'oh yeah, I know those ladies, you know I had lunch with them once in Kuala Lumpur...'
Life can be incredibly sweet when you least expect it. And PS for those out there who were pondering is it worth it, to go through all that trouble to try to author your first book? Yes it is worth it! And so much more. ...I love my job.
Tomi, your story is very funny in a "been there, done that" sort of way. I don't know if I could have pulled off the James Bond effect, though!
