Happy birthday 3G. Nine years ago today in Japan, NTT DoCoMo launched..

Yes, October 1, 2001. Nine years ago exactly today, Japanese NTT DoCoMo launched the world's first commercial 3G mobile service, under its FOMA brand. Congratulations and thank you NTT DoCoMo. It was a brave move, in a time when the world was in severe economic recession triggered by the dot-com bust. Today nobody doubts 3G and top phones and most advanced data services run on 3G. And this year Japan became the first country to shut down the 2G networks, so Japan has become the first country where every mobile phone subscription is 3G or faster.

On a personal note, I left Nokia in 2001 and started my own consultancy in 3G, TomiAhonen Consulting, on that same date, so my private practise consultancy is also 9 years old today. Boy does time fly. And now am heading into my tenth year of 3G consulting.. Cool.

On a wide screen monitor your "body text" becomes very wide and becomes difficult to read. One either has to narrow the browser window or, if on safari, use the reader mode. I really hate that such an excellent blog of yours may not be read by some people just because reading it was too difficult.
