Welcome to the 229th edition of the Carnival of the Mobilists (COTM as it used to be called), or Carnival of Mobilists (COM) as its now called. We have the honor of hosting it for the fourth time today.
This is a strange week of mobile, with lots of death around our Carnival. In the real world there are many FIFA tournament dreams that died this past week. But here in mobile we've also had rather surprising deaths. Just today we heard that Google's CEO Eric Schmidt announced there will never be a Nexus Two, so the life span of Google's entry into smartphones with its 'superphone' with the Nexus One lasted barely half a year. That is so new in the news, that we don't have a blog about it in this week's Carnival, perhaps in next week's edition.
THE I'M OFFICIALLY DEAD DEPARTMENT
But the previous death, only last week, was Microsoft's surprising termination of its Kin project. So Microsoft had been a phone maker only six weeks. C Enrique Ortiz (CEO) has discussed at the About Mobility blog the death of Kin and what this now means to Microsoft's focus on the smartphone opeating systems in his blog entitled "So what is, or what should be Microsoft's strategy in mobile?"
I MAY SOON BE DEAD DEPARTMENT
And while they aren't dead yet, JMac ie Jonathan MacDonald on his signature blog talks of how perilous is the love and support of any 'army of fanatics' in light of their brand not being all they expect. Jonathan warns that if the Apple army of fanatics ever decides to turn on its brand, there is nothing Apple could do to recover. Jonathan looks at Apple's issues with the antenna problems in "Apple army march against death grip."
I AM SO TOTALLY DEFINITELY DEAD, CAN YOU HEAR ME NOKIA, DEPARTMENT
If Apple's loyalist support is still a theoretical question, a real death happened last week that rocked the whole mobilist world, as Ricky Cadden, known as the Symbian Guru, on the blog of the same name, announced not just that he's ending his blog - but that he was so fed up with the troubles at Nokia and Symbian, that he very openly now will adopt Android as his smartphone operating system and will end his association with Symbian permanently. Ricky and his co-author Rita El Khoury wrote the ending blog entry with strong passionate pleas for Nokia and Symbian to change dramatically and rapidly and I urge all to go read that, not just as passionate former fans pleading for their previously loved brand, but as a warning that there are thousands more who think like this in the Symbian family, and that this kind of public rejection of a brand may happen to any player in the mobile space. Treat your fans well, brands. The ending blog at Symbain Guru, entitled 'Symbian Guru com is over" is here, - it had 294 comments already almost universally thanking Symbian Guru for excellent service over the years and regretting its demise, but also echoing very much the same reasons for the decision. Ricky will continue to blog on his personal blog http://www.rickycadden.com. Rita's parallel blog is here at the Dot Sisx blog Thank you Ricky and Rita for a great contribution to the development of the understanding of smartphones in general, and for years of loyal and facts-based support of the Symbian and Nokia platforms. It was truly a sad day in Espoo when they read your blog but we thank you for the honesty and wish you the very very best in your next lives.
REPORTS OF OUR DEATH ARE PREMATURE, DEPARTMENT
So, with all that death out of the way - what a way to start a Carnival, eh? then we get the guy who was first out of Nokia HQ to openly admit that the N97 had been a bad phone. Anssi Vanjoki is now taking charge of the mobile future of Nokia, and he has written a blog for Nokia Conversations promising Nokia is listening and will be back. A totally no-nonsense guy, Anssi can be taken by his word. I think this speaks well of those changes that Ricky and Rita asked for. Anssi's opening statement on his blog entitled 'The fightback starts now." Anssi is also responding to comments in the thread.
IF I MAKE IT BETTER, I AM SURE I WILL WIN DEPARTMENT
Then shifting from the smartphones to the apps, we have a good cautionary tale from Belen Pena's blog Belenpena's Posterous, where Belen explains the Richer interaction fallacy. Belen explains that there is a significant assumption here, and unless you understand the assumption, then making it better will not save your app. Very thought-provoking blog.
MY AGENCY IS BIGGER THAN YOUR AGENCY DEPARTMENT
Then moving onto mobile services, at the Mobi Thinking blog we have Andy Favell giving the in-depth look into the ten biggest mobile ad and creative agencies around the world, which are also featured in the new Mobi Thinking guide to the mobile agencies of the world (a very useful resource). We love such resources.
DON'T DO IT ALL FROM SCRATCH, USE A TEMPLATE DEPARTMENT
And talking of resources, what we really like is free templates! That is what we have from those kind people at Little Springs Design, where Steven Hoober blogs about the updates they have done to their free templates - which are on a Wiki so they also can be continuously updated too.
USING CROWDS TO FUND YOUR PROJECT DEPARTMENT
And then some 'communities dominate' thinking is always welcome at our Carnivals. At the Mobi Enthusiast blog Holly Kolman tells us about how to use croudfunding to help finance your mobile project.
USING CROWDS TO HELP IN CONTENT DISCOVERY DEPARTMENT
Peggy Ann Salz over at M-Search Groove blog is this week interviewing Colm Healy, the EMEA Services VP for Qualcomm who explains how we can use social tools to help in the ever increasing problems of content discovery. I also should mention that Peggy kindly does a monthly podcast with me on the mobile industry stats (thanks Peggy). This month's podcast should be up within a day or so.
HOW TO DO QT APPS FOR OVI DEPARTMENT
At the TamsS60 blog we have very hands-on practical, step-by-step guide on how to do QT for Ovi. Thanks.
STEP INTO THE FUTURE DEPARTMENT
And I'll end this edition of the Carnival with a blog from the future. Lars Cosh-Ishii and the kind folks over at Wireless Watch Japan have taken the trouble to do a 'Western eyes' view of one of this summer's top phones in Japan, the Fujitsu F-06 for NTT DoCoMo in the blog Japan Superphone Specs. The specs to us mere mortals outside of Japan's keitai wonderphones are mindboggling: waterproof, 13 megapixel, MP4 video at 1920 x 1080 with FeliCa, One Seg, etc etc etc. If you want to see what will American and European phones feature in a couple of years, here is our future.
BEST BLOG OF WEEK DEPARTMENT
This was a tough week to consider who to give the best blog of the week but in the end, I thought the discussion of why the thinking of 'make it better will produce a winner' is a fallacy, by Belen Pena at Belenpena's Posterous blog is this week's winner. Congratulations to all!

This strategy mostly involves pairing from a money put and in-the-money call (call option which winds up above the strike price). If you're just starting out in the world of binary options, select the shorter expiration dates, since this will help you get yourself a feel to the market and never having to analyze long-term market chatter. Example: [Pays 100 when the FTSE closes above X on date T].
