I'm still trying to fully "understand" Twitter and post the occasional update for my small group of followers. But I've also noticed it is a great channel to reach quick updates to fans. Now consider a real star, with real fans, like say UK comedian, actor, writer and talk-show host "quizmaster" Stephen Fry (from A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster, QI etc), who is a total techie geek by the way - his smartphones obsessive blog - the new adventures of Stephen Fry - is a must read for all geeks. Informative and hilarious.
But yes, he has 32,000 fans already following his daily updates on Twitter. So he just for example posted from over the Atlantic while onboard an American Airlines plane with internet connection, and was able to post Tweets from high altitude.
Now, thinking of this from a new media perspective. Those Twitter followers use either the PC based internet (the 6th mass media channel) or mobile (7th) as their way to track their idol. Meanwhile Mr Fry is able to use either the 6th or 7th mass medium to post updates to Twitter. A new kind of hybrid mass media experience.
Where will this evolve? We have lots of major superstar level celebrities experimenting in this space, from Stephen Fry to Sean "P Diddy" Combs to President-elect Obama. They will discover new opportunities to connect with fans and deliver particular experiences to them, via the new media, in particular the newest, mobile. And I personally found it particularly funny, when Stephen Fry identifies himself on Twitter as "Dancer, couturier, superheavyweight boxer, neo-plasticist and rapper" Ha-ha, yeah, great one Stephen, great one. From dancer to rapper, we can see where the real heart and soul of the Fry resides..
"But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east and Juliet is the sun" - Shakespeare "Romeo and Juliet"
