Helping port web applications to mobile: Sprint Titan

Sprint is approaching the internet and web content world with a healthy dose of open standards in a welcome move to help developers bring their web services to mobile phones. Sprint calls it Sprint Titan and it is featured in this week's edition of Information Week.

I like this on a couple of levels. First, it helps bridge that gap between the internet world and the mobile world. Obviously the internet (6th mass media) is not the same as mobile (the 7th mass media) but Sprint Titan offers a platform and eco-system to port existing internet applications to mobile. Secondly, its a funny coincidence, as I just blogged over at my 7thmassmedia.com blog a few days ago as my quote of the day, McGuire's Law, which states that "the value of any product increases with its mobility." A good law and lots of evidence that it is true in a very billable and commercially viable way ha-ha. So this is a great initiative to help internet based apps and services become more mobile.

But yeah, who'se that McGuire? Its Russ McGuire, the VP of Strategy at.. Sprint Nextel. Nice coincidence. Russ has a great blog looking at current hot topics in mobile at the aptly-named McGuire's Law.

Thirdly, I always like it when new innovations are built on principles of openness, as this is with open standards. Good initiative, lets see how it evolves.
