The inventor of SMS? Is this really true? Is thought it was a bounch of guys designing the specs. for GSM through ETSI

Tomi T Ahonen

Hi Johan

That is true. Matti Makkonen worked on the specifications of NMT, the 1G predecessor of GSM, and suggested back in the early 1980s, a decade before GSM, that we need a simple messaging system for mobile phones. He also pushed this idea when the early drafting for GSM started, so that many bought into the idea and it was incorporated into GSM. As you know, GSM was the first standard that enabled GSM (and as a form of poetic justice, the first commercial deployment of person-to-person GSM was indeed in Finland, even though a network system testing use of GSM was first deployed in the UK, that was not in the way that Matti suggested, from a mobile phone to a mobile phone.)

Thanks for writing

Tomi Ahonen :-)
