Half of internet users now active users of IM Instant Messaging

The rapid growth of IM Instant Messaging continues. One of the stories that came out while I was on vacation, and promised to get to, was the number of active Instant Messaging (IM) users. IDC reports that the number is 750 million users, or half of the 1.5 billion internet users globally in 2008. That compares with approx 1.3 billion email user, so IM user numbers are really catching up fast to email (but are a long way from the 2.7 billion who are active users of SMS text messaging obviously, worldwide).
