We talk a lot about the web and mobile when we discuss digital convergence. There are also big developments in other areas of the media landscape. Last month the International Herald Tribune (27 Feb 2008) gave numbers on two other exciting digital media developments.

On the side of radio (and what I like to call Fourth of the Mass Media) there are the new satellite digital broadcasters. Sirius is one in the USA, which has now 8.3 million subscribers. They pay on average 2.50 USD per month to listen to Sirius radio.

And on the side of TV (ie Fifth of the Mass Media), there is the hottest new thing, IPTV - a super-multi-channel offering via the internet. The same issue of the Herald Tribune quoted Ovum numbers for 2008 that there are 10 million people watching IPTV in the world, 3 million of those in South Korea. Fascinating detail from Korea, 20% of the IPTV revenues come from educational programming.
