YouTube is having more problems with copyrights. Now there are sports organizations that are joining in the complaints YouTube has copyrighted content on its site. The British Premier League soccer/football league has sued YouTube and the British Rugby League has also joined in the lawsuit.
This follows the pattern we saw earlier with YouTube and for example comedy clips such as those from Comedy Central, NBC's Saturday Night Live etc. And we discussed it soon after YouTube was sold, that we thought it might have been "cheating" by YouTube that they achieved artificially high growth rates and user numbers, fully knowing it was achieved by infringing on copyrighted content. We will continue to monitor this story.
Hi Tomi - I suspect this is all about control. What if everyone at a soccer match or rugby match shot the action on their mobile - and shared it immediatly through the joy of ubiquitous computing. Is content I create when watching something I have paid to see mine or theirs?
What's the difference between an individual shooting this to share with the world and a media organisation doing the same?
These big players are fiddling while Rome burns imho.
Take a look at this post (http://fasterfuture.blogspot.com/2007/08/battle-of-kruger-park-survival-of-most.html) about a bit of UGC on Youtube outstripping the BBC's broadcast of Planet Earth.
The long tail is already getting bigger than the stumpy dog!
