This week's Economist (the issue that went on sale last Friday, cover date 28 April, 2007) has a special cover story, first editorial and 14 page special report on wireless telecoms. The cover calls it When Everything Connects, the coming wireless revolution. The actual cover page for the 14 page special calls it A World of Connections, a Special Report on Telecoms, dated 28 April 2007.
It is an excellent survey on wireless. Very broadly, not only mobile telecoms (ie mobile phones ie cellphones) but also includes everything from WiMax to RFID to technologies such machine-to-machine connectivity and human-implanted devices. There apparently is already a night club - Baja Beach Club in Barcelona Spain that has its VIP's identified by a tiny radio transmitter that is embedded under the skin by a nurse using a syringe. Ouch. But yes, I'd go for it ha-ha.. The second night club of the Baja chain in Rotterdam has also adopted this technology already. Like the Economist writes "As go the bohemians, so, eventually go the rest of us." Yes, coming soon to an operation near you..
Like almost all of the Economist's reporting, it is a very well researched and well balanced piece covering honestly and very thoroughly the topic of wireless. And while many of the stories and examples may be familiar to regular readers of our blog, it still does make the case remarkably well that we are facing a true revolution. I like the concluding thoughts, that as radio technology and miniaturization keep evolving, we soon will have interconnected radio technologies in so many daily appliances and uses, that we will start to become oblivious to them. Very much like the electric motor. The original electric motors were large expensive things and very power hungry. Today we have tiny electric motors in all kinds of gadgets such as the tray feeding our DVDs into our DVD player. A typical household has lots of electric motors which serve little utilitarian needs for us. I also liked the lesson that upon the dawn of a new technological era, it is nearly impossible to imagine the full reach of that technology. Marconi who invented radio, saw its use as a wireless telegraph. He could not foresee commercial broadcasting use of the technology.
An excellent special report, worth reading, storing, and re-reading. Only hurry to the news stand today, tomorrow the Economist releases its next issue...
