I've been rushing from one big event to another and tried to fit in customer visits between those. So the blog postings have suffered. But this is such a significant event for digital communities, that I have to acknowledge it in passing even though it happened already weeks ago.
Hutchison Whampoa, which has the "Three" brand of 3G mobile services in nine countries, has introduced something we've been expecting and predicting with Alan for a while already. Now bloggers can be paid every time someone views their page.
Not all bloggers obviously, this is a 3G service only available on 3G mobile phones. But within that world (and remember that worldwide Hutchison/Three has already 10 million paying subscribers) this is quite a revolution. Launched first in Italy and then the UK, now the Three companies are all rolling out this service idea.
As typical of all mobile internet content, there is a fee for viewing content. So too if you want to view the blogged content. But now the innovation. Hutchison/3 will pay the blog creator a share of each charge, so the more they view your mobile blog page(s), the more you get paid. Improve the quality and quantity of your content and make ever more money this way.
This is one of the new ways that the mobile telecoms industry is now deploying the practical solutions around the ideas that I wrote about in my second book in 2002 (m-Profits) when I predicted that one day in the future all content owners on the web will be paid. Yes, its very small steps, obviously, and this will take a decade or more to happen, but the steps are inevitable. Just like Kwickee Guides earlier and the Greek hotel guides and Oh My News in Korea and the citizen paparazzi payments etc., we are finding ways to pay for content created by us regular people.
A very important milestone, this innovation by Three. I warmly congratulate them and this is a front-runner for Pearl of the Month (which regular readers of this blogsite know, I announce once per month at my official website www.tomiahonen.com and you can scroll back to mid 2001 to see the older innovative monthly mobile services that I have publicised)
Dominate !
