Tester - you can absolutely count "sold as new" models. People buy them. The advantage is that the phones were all designed as flagship phones, using the best materials, manufactured to the highest tolerances. When you buy a "new" Samsung A, you are not getting the latest, best chip. You aren't getting last year's best chip. You are getting a chip designed from the beginning to compromise performance for cheapness. As is the rest of the phone.

You also get the Apple warranty and support...same as if you bought the most expensive iPhone. You'll get updates to the latest iOS for far longer than any cheap Android phone.

And, of course, there is the used iPhone market which is alive and well.

Older iPhones are starting to get quite the bad rap about them with regards to updates and such. Also, consider how your average Android customer thinks with regards to upgrade models. Most Android customers have had bad experiences buying the yesteryear model, and do not understand the Apple model is different in that regard.

Apple must therefore release a brand new $400 model in order to attract significantly more customers - however, that would be a betrayal to a big sub-group of their current customers. Nevermind such a device would be inferior in every way to the flagship products, it would tarnish the exclusivity aura of Apple, which is actually a big selling point for many Apple customers.

Hi Lollz,

Yes, numbers for the quarter are forthcoming...but will be irrelevant to this particular discussion. This is all about "the future"....where people willing to pay $700 and up for a smartphone collapse...along with Apple.

Just yesterday an article was out claiming that the iPhone 7 was outselling the iPhone X and the iPhone 6s wasn't far behind. It was another "Apple is Doomed" perspective...and came from a survey of only 500 Apple customers. But...I wouldn't be surprised at all if the iPhone X turns out to not be the best selling iPhone. It should be expected that the most expensive model is sold into a smaller base. Is anyone surprised that the Galaxy S is not Samsung's top selling model?

Apple has a different "cheaper phone" strategy. But should even THAT fail...Apple could create "new" models for less. They can. Yes...they really can. Should they ever need to.

Apps/Games on apple bring more money than Android???

Our studies show that the iPhone X, alongside the latest smartphone models from Google and Samsung, is achieving game monetization KPIs up to 270% above the industry average.

In mobile Free-to-Play (F2P) games we typically see between 2-3% of players making In-App Purchases (IAP), with an average Lifetime Value (LTV) of $1.5. However, these monetization KPIs have begun to increase significantly as smartphones become faster, larger and more capable of delivering an engaging gaming experience.

Comprising 1.7 million iPhone 8, iPhone X, Google Pixel 2 and Samsung Galaxy S8 devices, the study looked at both the percentage of players going on to spend money on IAPs each day (% daily conversion) and each player’s LTV. The results revealed the following monetization KPIs:

In contrast, the iPhone 7 achieved a 5.63% payer fraction and a LTV of $1.27. While the Samsung Galaxy S7 achieved 8.33% payer fraction and a $1.70 LTV.

Mark Robinson, CEO, commented: “Making money in mobile F2P games has always been a challenging business. However, this latest study should make encouraging reading for game publishers and developers as it reinforces the trend that better performing smartphone models deliver more positive game monetization KPIs.

“Of course, the large majority of mobile gamers aren’t using the latest handsets but eventually those handsets will be replaced with better performing models and, with some of the latest Apple and Google devices achieving LTV’s of almost $4 and payer fractions of almost 12%, I’m sure developers will be waiting eagerly for this shift to take place.”

Study based on 1.7m handsets across North America in January & February 2018.

Yes, Abdul, do you not read the posts you link to? By far the most valuable customers own the latest iPhones. And this is North America only. Finally, no aggregation of all iOS to all Android was given.

So, one model of Samsung had a better LTV than one model of iPhone. The iPhone X and 8 are almost double the Samsung Galaxy 8/8+.

But there is wierdness. iPhone 8+ was listed as $.76 per user while the iPhone 8 tops the list at $3.97. Something is wrong with those results.

There is so much data NOT presented that we can really say much. Even the headline "Latest smartphones achieve record game monetization KPIs" isn't supported. Are the latest phones making the most money? Apparently. Is it because they are fastest and better at gaming? Perhaps.

Or...perhaps the people most likely to spend the most money on ANYTHING, including gaming, are also the most likely to buy the latest, most expensive phones.

I think that's probably as close to the truth as possible. People in better control of their spending habits will both more likely buy a smartphone with a more adequate price/performance ratio AND condider spending money on IAP a wasted investment.

Of course a study made from people in one single country is hardly saying much. It may look entirely different in other parts of the world.

I agree Tester. And while it's interesting to see breakdown by a couple phone models...that doesn't give you Android vs. iOS. Even if the per iPhone user is a lot more (and everything ever published has said that was true)....there are 5 times as many Android users. Just not 5 times as many paying users...and that's why the support of iPhone is distorted in comparison to it's market share.

It's just that THIS article doesn't go into the kind of detail that would let us know. We did have one awhile ago that purported that total Android game revenue in China had finally topped iOS.

I just think he's not finding much news in the Smartphone realm, as well as not finding much interest in the industry - it is pretty much same old, same new old after all. :)
