Hi Alan
Thanks for pointing out this book by Richard Sennett. I will have to have a rummage around his other writings as well.

This current book read like it was going to lead to some good, deep philosophical conclusions. You can imagine his experience and observation of craft tasks through his writing leading to some strong final comment. Sadly he gives the game away in the final pages when he apparently, glibly, dismisses one of the joint German words for experience: Erlebnis. This he states, "...makes and emotional inner impress,". This seems so Anglo-Saxon but not surprising I suppose for one born in 1943.
