When Tamagotchi meets Pop Idol: Pop Kids from Netherlands

Why didn't I see this coming..  A Dutch company called Ex Machina has developed a new entertainment concept that sits in the middle of virtual reality and interactive TV. They've merged the tamagotchi toy idea with the Pop Idol/American Idol concept. They call it the Pop Kids and presented about it at Mobile Monday San Francisco on Monday

So here is the idea. Two people (with phones) will need to conceive the Pop Kid (so it takes some of your virtual genes as well as those of your partner's genes). You then get your "tamagotchi" ie your future Pop Idols star wannabe as the baby. Over the next 18 years you create the right environment to create a future pop star out of your kid. Obviously time is condensed, every year goes by in one day, so this whole game runs its full course in 18 days. But yes, you have to play with your kid, help him/her to learn music, singing and dancing and so forth. But also the kid will learn from both parents - the kid's music tastes will evolve based on what the parents listen to during those 18 days (from your playlist). Also whatever you do, the kid will learn from that, so the service tracks what websites you visit, where your mobile phone wanders, etc - all these will help your kid become full-rounded to be a good contestant, or perhaps mal-adjusted and thus perhaps a bad contestant.

Also the parents will both have to be involved in their Pop Kid evolution. So the parents have to decide if to send the kid to a childrens music school at age 4 - and any resulting disagreements between the parents will then reflect on trauma for the virtual kid as this grows up (was the home a nurturing and harmonious environment or did the parents always argue etc)

And yes, its Pop Idol. So there are some youth contests along the way, but at age 18 the Pop Kids then enter their Pop Idols style singing/music contest to find a virtual pop star. Oh, and yes, the concept is now being circulated with TV broadcasters to turn it into a reality TV show (tracking not only the virtual kids, but obviously their real world parents, probably arguing and bickering about what to do with their kid etc)

Virtual reality meet Tamagotchi toy meet Pop Idol. This is something we have to follow. Good luck Ex Machina, I think you're onto something just weird enough to be a hit...
