Our long-time fan and friend from Spain, Agustin Calvo, runs one of Spain's biggest mobile advertising companies, MoviDream (ie mobile dream). He has been so kind about our blog and book, and said recently of Communities Dominate Brands, "I use it as a bible in my business." which really warms our hearts. He lists our book as one of the five best books he has ever read. Thank you kindly Agustin.
But we are kindered spirits, Agustin was for example one of the first people to sign up at Forum Oxford when we had our first couple of dozen members (today Forum Oxford has over 1300).
Agustin is also a significant influencer of the mobile media industry and writes his blog - in Spanish obviously but for our Spanish readers, please take a look, Agustin talks about all the hot topics going on in this space, such as 2D Barcodes right now. His blog is Despierte Su Negocio.
But the reason I HAD to write about Agustin today, is his book. Agustin faces a common problem so many of our readers also face, that we kind of "get it" about where mobile is going (or engagement marketing, social networking, digital convergence etc) but many of our peers don't "get it". You can't really force your colleague to come and read our blog or whatever, to try to get them the message.
Agustin solved in a wonderfully marketing executive way. He wrote a book. Well, the person doesn't have time to read 300 pages, so it needs to be a short book, or actually a booklet. 30 pages. Very easy non-technical text, telling a compelling story about a small business and getting to understand mobile. As a marketing channel, a new way to connect and serve customers. Its called "Open your eyes and wake up your business." It is a fast read - one hour and is compellingly written. For the totally non- techncial but business person. Here is an excerpt:
"Many brand names have already taken advantage of this phenomenon and work hard to facilitate connections between the members of various communities, and to provide them with enriched experiences. They want those communities to talk about them, about their products, for people to associate their products to their communities; to support the community so that it supports their products and along the way ups its sales.
This is why, for instance, Fanta takes groups of young people on cruises, and that Carlsberg charters planes for their clients; J&B has huge parties aboard yachts, and many brands targetting young adults, hold hundreds of parties in nightclubs, where people chat among themselves and play games with their mobile phones on a giant screen? Why do you think that it’s so much more expensive to advertise on the virtual Nascar billboards in videogames than on the real one?
Coca-Cola has launched in Spain an Internet web chat with more than a million users and a mobile portal full of games and things for mobile phones. From potato chips to well known restaurants, many brand name companies give free tune and videogame downloads of the latest released movies. With the music they promote, record companies offer personalized Internet and mobile chat rooms where people can chat with music stars; movie studios offer screensaver downloads and also soundtrack downloads of the movies they are releasing. If you go to a grocery store and buy a pack of Heineken, they give away free text messages for your mobile phone. Before many International Music Festival start, the organizers send text messages and e-mails to the registered festival spectators (to encourage them to attend and for to buy the tickets in advance), and during and after the concert they send text messages too ("in 15 minutes X-Band will be live on the green stage")."
And BEST of all, its free! As a member of the MMA he's already given many people access to the book, but now Agustin has set up a special English-language blogsite Muchomobile where you can go and have the book downloaded.
And for the corporate PR people out there. Here is a wonderful corporate gift idea. Agustin already arranged for Telefonica to hand out 5,000 copies of the booklet to their customers. He's very interested in a small fee per copy and I urge you to consider using this in such ways to help small and medium size enterprises in your market to learn about mobile as a new marketing channel. Very cheap, simple, cost-effective way to build understanding. Then those SME's will go and build traffic into your networks!
Please talk to Agustin about these kinds of inquiries. But read the booklet first. Its a really wonderfully written story.
It makes me wonder if Agustin Calvo knows the power of the Qode platform?
Just Qode it.
An interactive experience.
