Amazing article... Amazing statistics...

I carry three (and acively use two) cellphones... It's pretty strange that just three years ago, I thought I couldn't afford even one cell... My paycheque hasn't gone really high from then... Cellphones are just really really affordable in India these days...

Using net on the phones is yet to catch up (read become affordable), but i'm sure it will, pretty soon...

Anyway, loved reading your blog post...

Tomi T Ahonen

Hi Hsalihba

Thank you for the comments, yes me too. I noticed that I joined the two-phone user base in 2000 (one from my employer, Nokia, the other was my own private phone) and from 2002 I was a three phone/three SIM card user; and for a while I had four with my cellular 3G modem, but now only carry two active phones and the laptop/modem so 3 subscriptions while the fourth is still on reserve ha-ha..

Thanks for writing

Tomi :-)

Matt

This is great and I really enjoyed reading it - do yuo have any more blog or insight into the Business Mobile Phone market specifically?

Thanks and keep blogging - this is really great stuff.

Tomi Ahonen

Hi Matt

Good question. Yeah, my early career I started on the business side of telecoms (when the big profits and customer numbers were there). but as mobile moved to mass markets, the bigger opportunities came from consumer services. I do have this rule of thumb, that I call the 20-30-40 rule, that in any given (Industrialized World) country, about 20% of all mobile phone subscriptions are by enterprise/corporate customers, who deliver 40% of the revenues and 30% of the profits.

When we have a company phone - used for company business - then we are not as particular about saving money as we do on our private phones, that is why 20% of customers deliver 40% of revenues. But companies will also negotiate better telecoms deals than individuals can, which is why profits are not in the same proportion as total revenues.

This rule of thumb tends to hold well, still today.

Hope it helped. Thank you for writing

Tomi T Ahonen

Hi Bayu

Thank you for the comment and kind words.

Nice question, thank you.. Yes, its been a hobby of mine, studying this industry as my main job, from the time I created the world's first fixed-mobile telecoms convergence service (for Elisa one of the telecoms operator-incumbents in Finland, where mobile phone penetrations were leading the world at the time, at the breathaking levels of beyond 20% per capita ha-ha) in 1997. I joined Nokia and soon was heading Nokia's global business consultancy. So it was quite literally my job to study the business of mobile telecoms - from the view of what just then became the world's largest handset maker - and with all the immense resoures that Nokia had (and obviously still has today) at its disposal. To the degree, that one of the units reporting to me was the Nokia 3G Research Centre, which was Nokia's end-user research arm, and our researchers managed surveys over two years that covered over 100,000 interviews of mobile phone users in over a dozen countries around the world, on anything from basic SMS text messaging to mobile commerce to mobile advertising.

So to your question of "how long" ha-ha, it has taken me to study and collect the info on the industry, I can say that I've studied the business of mobile telecoms more-or-less full time for 11 years, and obviously have released now six books on the topic, with my first released in 2002. To indicate how well those are respected in the industry, I have already been quoted or referenced in 35 books by other authors (and countless industry journals, academic papers; and in hundreds of press stories etc)

But one last point. While I've taken 11 years of serious work to study and report on the industry, this is at the moment the most rapidly changing industry in the world. So you don't need to spend a decade to become an expert. The mobile telecoms industry is going through rapid stages of obsolescence. It is most pronounced in handsets, as the global replacement cycle is 18 months, so in 36 months - in three years - a new phone is obsolete. No other industry goes this fast from brand new, to the garbage can. If you are entering this industry, you don't need to study old cases, technologies and concepts. If you get to the new stuff now, and study the industry for a year or two, you can become a very solid expert. It does not take a decade (although it doesn't hurt to also have some depth in the field ha-ha)

Hey, you should join us at Forum Oxford, the free expert community for the thought-leaders of the mobile industry. It is fully sponsored by Oxford University, but it is not UK-focused; our British membership is under 40%, and we have members from over 60 countries. The discussions are very lively, intelligent and deep. The website to join is www.forumoxford.com. You have to be invited to join, so you need an "enrollment key" which is asked the first time you sign up. You can use the word "forumoxford" as your enrollment key, and you are in. Welcome.

You should know, about Forum Oxford, that as it is based on the university student interactive system, our discussion board is a bit confusing to find initially. Follow "your courses" and then look for the Oxford University Next Generation Mobile Panel or something like that. And once there, look for "Post your comments here" and you'll find us. We have over 40 authors in mobile, and 16 of the 20 best-read bloggers in mobile as members. My dear friend and fellow author of 3 books on mobile, Ajit Jaokar, is co-chair with me. I'm sure if you liked this article, you'll love Forum Oxford.

I will send you the document..

Thank you for writing

Everyone has their favorite way of using the internet. Many of us search to find what we want, click in to a specific website, read what’s available and click out. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because it’s efficient. We learn to tune out things we don’t need and go straight for what’s essential.

Experts have talked about this before. How many times have you read about the importance of ‘adding value’ for your audience? How many times have you read about ‘building trust’ with your readers/prospects?
Many, many times. You know it well. Every marketing guru has spoken about this topic. I’m sick of hearing it. But it STILL bears repeating.

I had a desire to start my own commerce, however I didn't have got enough amount of cash to do it. Thank heaven my colleague proposed to use the lowest-rate-loans.com. Thus I used the term loan and made real my desire.
