Fun to look back at this article. Turns out that messaging was handled quite well without physical keyboards. Blind texting didn’t turn out to be a requirement.

And American companies now rule mobile. Android and iOS are the only two that matter and both are US based. Not bad to go from third world to world to world dominance in less than 10 years.

What in hindsight was missing from this analysis? A screen that could be anything was going to turn out to be much more valuable than any form of prebuilt-fixed keyboard.

And while the App Store was a year into the future...the iPhones original killer app was Safari. A true desktop internet experience on a mobile phone.

Tomi wasn’t wrong about the power of SMS, just the need for a keyboard and PERHAPS in not genericising SMS into messaging. iMessage has proven to be a very sticky feature for the iPhone.
