I presented a keynote and moderated a youth panel at the Wireless Connections conference in Calgary Canada this week.
In my presentation on the near future of wireless mobile, I focused very much on the findings from our book on Generation-C and the Connected Age. After my 50 minute keynote, I then moderated a youth panel of five mobile phone users between the ages of 16 - 19 who all had had their mobile phone for two years or more. The panel was most fascinating.
Out of my presentation the biggest interest seemed to be with the issues around TV content, music and mobile, and SMS text messaging, which is still growing most rapidly in Canada. But the best part of this conference was the youth panel. Each of the speakers after the morning panel referred to that panel discussion with clearly strong amazement.
Some of the themes that emerged from the youth panel (issues that we discussed in our book obviously) - that the youth are very addicted to the mobile phone. Yes, they take it everywhere, to the bathroom, even to bed.
That they use SMS text messaging heavily. Three of the five panelists would not want to be without it, SMS was the killer app for them. That they would send messages after going to bed, and yes, they use SMS to cheat in tests in class etc. While Canada with only 50% mobile phone penetration is not one of the leading countries in mobile by any means, certainly there too that Generation-C is starting to emerge. It is a global phenomenon.
Merry Christmas! What's your most desire present you want to get? Hmm maybe you and me have one thing in commend, the white iphone 4.
